The story of a cute mask monkey named Pretty and her trainer Mr. Muklis.
Most Indonesians know about Topeng Monyet since they were little. Topeng Monyet (literally means masked monkey) is one form of traditional entertainment in Indonesia. However, I did not know how the monkeys and their handlers prepare for their shows. During my vacation to my hometown in Banjarnegara, Central Java, I saw a masked monkey show and my curiosity was triggered again. I decided to follow Mr. Muklis, a monkey handler and his monkey, Pretty, on their normal day while doing their daily activities.
Most, including me are under the impression that the monkeys are being unethically exploited in order to be able to perform, but it turns out that is not always the case. After following Mr. Muklis and Pretty, I found out that the life of Pretty, as a monkey mask, is not as dreadful as I imagined. For Mr. Muklis, Pretty is not only a tool to get money, but he considers Pretty as his partner and has brought life to his family. Mr. Muklis loves Pretty and thinks of Pretty as part of his family.
Mr. Muklis and Pretty go around the village everyday to perform, except on Fridays and Sundays.
Pretty’s favorite drink
Pretty really likes milk. She drinks milk before she leaves home with Mr. Muklis and in between performances.

The performance
Pretty performs in front of the audience. Children are very interested in Pretty’s funny behavior. Performances shown are normal masked monkey attractions that mimic human actions such as riding a rickshaw, pulling a cart, and shopping.
Relaxing Massage
After finishing a day of activity in the afternoon, Mr. Muklis always gives a massage to Pretty. Mr. Muklis doesn’t force Pretty to work excessively, therefore Mr. Muklis often gives Pretty breaks so Pretty will not get tired and feel relaxed.
