Sunrise at Punthuk Setumbu

Punthuk Setumbu is a name of a hill located about 4 km west of Borobudur temple in Karangrejo village. Punthuk Setumbu stands at 1,300 meter above sea level. It takes one hour to reach Karangrejo Village in Magelang regency from Yogyakarta. From Borobudur temple, go to the direction of Manohara Hotel and go straight past the hotel until we see the sign of Punthuk Setumbu. Then, we have to hike up from the sign for about 25 minutes to reach the peak. There is entrance fee of Rp. 15.000 for all visitors.

We can see the spectacular view of Borobudur temple’s highest stupa with the background of Mount Merapi and Mount Merbabu. It is best to see in the early morning because we can look at the sunrise that peeks through the two mountains and the Borobudur temple. To catch the sunrise, we need to have arrived there at 5 a.m. I saw everything covered with white fog and slowly the golden light of the sun started rising. One of the best views I have ever seen in my life. You have to make sure that the weather is clear if you plan to hike and enjoy the beautiful view.

Punthuk Setumbu has become popular in the last couple of years for its sunrise viewing attraction. It is also very affordable because it is close to Yogyakarta. Punthuk Setumbu is not only visited by local tourists, but also foreign tourists. I met a French tourist who was on a holiday in Yogyakarta and he made the time to visit Punthuk Setumbu during his trip.
